South Africa holds a special place in my heart, and every trip feels like a new chapter in a love story. Whether it’s the rich history, breathtaking landscapes, or the warm hospitality, this country has an energy that always calls me back. This time, I had the pleasure of leading a 12-day adventure across Johannesburg and Cape Town with a fantastic group of women, and the experiences were nothing short of magical. We laughed, learned, danced, and soaked in all the beauty that South Africa offers.
Let’s dive into this incredible journey through two of South Africa’s most iconic cities!
Journey Through Johannesburg
Johannesburg is a city that beats to its own rhythm. It’s bold, dynamic, and packed with history and culture at every corner. From emotional visits to historical sites to vibrant nightlife, this city has it all.
Cheers to New Beginnings
To make everyone feel extra special from the get-go, I set up a warm welcome with goodie bags, a splash of champagne, and a 5-star stay to give everyone the true South African soft life treatment. After some much needed rest and settling in, we had an all-white theme for our first night out—so fun and classy! We headed out to experience South Africa’s nightlife, and let me tell you, it was a time. Watching everyone soaking in the vibe, music, and energy was the perfect way to kick off what would be an unforgettable journey together.
Apartheid Museum: Confronting History
Our visit to the Apartheid Museum was a deeply emotional and educational experience. The museum offers a harrowing glimpse into the apartheid era, showcasing the brutality and injustice that Black South Africans faced under this system of racial segregation. It’s one of those places that leaves a lasting mark.
Walking through the museum, I felt a lot of emotions—anger, sadness, and frustration. But it’s crucial to understand this part of history so we can learn from it, reflect, and remember. The effects of apartheid still shape the country today, and it’s important to honor those who fought for freedom and equality.
If you visit Johannesburg, this museum is an absolute must. But make sure to give yourself time—this is not a place to rush through.
Nelson Mandela’s House & Soweto: A Legacy of Strength
Next, we visited Nelson Mandela’s House in Soweto, where both Nelson and Winnie Mandela lived before and after his imprisonment. Walking through this space, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of history. Winnie Mandela, often called the "Mother of the Nation," was a fierce activist in her own right. Her resilience, along with Nelson’s, played a critical role in South Africa’s fight for freedom. The house tells the story of their shared legacy, a legacy that has touched the hearts of millions worldwide.
In Soweto, we also stopped at the Hector Pieterson Memorial, which honors the young lives lost during the 1976 Soweto Uprising. This memorial is another powerful reminder of the country’s journey to equality.
Hot Air Balloon Over the Cradle of Humankind
The hot air balloon ride over the Cradle of Humankind was pure magic. Floating gently over a landscape with millions of years of history beneath us felt surreal. The Cradle is known as the birthplace of humanity, holding some of the oldest hominid fossils ever discovered.
Watching the sunrise from above, lighting up this place of such ancient significance, was beyond words. For some of the women, it was their first time in a hot air balloon, and seeing the excitement and awe in their eyes made it all the more memorable.
Later on, we stopped by Nelson Mandela Square to snap some pics by the iconic Mandela statue, then wrapped up the day with a beautiful dinner at Signature Restaurant. The live jazz, incredible food, and Mlu’s thoughtful surprise of personalized beaded necklaces made for the perfect ending to such an amazing day.
Safari at Mabula Game Reserve
No trip to South Africa is complete without a safari, and our visit to the Mabula Game Reserve was a highlight! We embarked on a safari drive through the Greater Mabula Game Reserve, where we spotted giraffes, zebras, and hippos in their natural habitat. The sunset over the savannah, with a glass of wine in hand, was the perfect end to an adventurous day. There’s something magical about seeing these magnificent animals up close, and it’s one of the many reasons I keep coming back to this beautiful country.
Exploring Cape Town: A Blend of Adventure and Soft Life
Cape Town is the ultimate mix of adventure and luxury. From stunning natural landscapes to world-class wineries, this city truly has it all.
Table Mountain: Views You’ll Never Forget
Of course, no trip to Cape Town is complete without a visit to Table Mountain. We took the cable car up to the summit on a day when the weather couldn’t have been more perfect. Clear skies, panoramic views of the city and coastline—it was breathtaking. You really feel like you’re standing on top of the world, and trust me, the photos don’t do it justice!
Stellenbosch Wine Tasting: Sipping in Style
Next up, we indulged in a day of wine tasting in the famous Stellenbosch wine region. This is one of my favorite parts of Cape Town—there’s just something so relaxing about sipping delicious wine while surrounded by beautiful vineyards. We visited five different wineries, each with its own unique charm, and by the end of the day, let’s just say we were all ready for a nap!
Cape Peninsula & Chapman’s Peak: The Scenic Route
We couldn’t leave Cape Town without driving along the Cape Peninsula and Chapman’s Peak Drive. This is easily one of the most scenic drives in the world, with dramatic cliffs dropping into the ocean and views that’ll leave you speechless. We stopped for photos and just soaked in the beauty of the coastline—this drive is a must-do when visiting Cape Town.
Dining Highlights: Johannesburg and Cape Town
Every meal on this trip was a whole experience on its own! From five-star steak and grilled prawns to traditional South African flavors that warmed us up from the inside out, the food scene just hit, you've got to check out Signature Restaurant in Johannesburg and Gold Restaurant in Cape Town
We had a little bit of everything, from sharing buttery lamb shank at a lively night spot to savoring delicate sushi bites and diving into a true South African feast of local favorites like braised beef, sweet potatoes, and perfectly spiced dishes. Each bite was memorable, and I’m already missing those flavors!
